Water contamination monitors in oil systems

The EASZ-1 Moisture Sensor provides a compact, real-time solution to continuous water contamination condition monitoring in hydraulic and lubricating systems used throughout manufacturing industry
The EASZ-1 Moisture Sensor provides a compact, real-time solution to continuous water contamination condition monitoring in hydraulic and lubricating systems used throughout manufacturing industry. Apart from measuring water contamination in dehydrators, compressor oil lines and engines, the sensor is also being used to measure moisture in vegetable oils, light and heavy fuels and hydrocarbons. It operates with any type of oil regardless of density and can be zero calibrated to a particular oil for low moisture content as well as higher content up to 25%.

Custom curves can be plotted for unknown oils at varying temperatures.

The sensor has a built in temperature sensor so that dependencies on temp, dielectric and water content for example can be internally graphed.

The sensor reads values in steps of 100ppm, starting from 100ppm, and is loop powered.

On-line oil monitoring requires fast response.

Frequently water contamination in oil can go unnoticed.

The response time of the EASZ-1 is 1 second, as opposed to the previously available 15 to 30 minutes, which enables the user to detect free water or moisture build up in the oil circulating system immediately, before serious contamination has occured.

The EASZ-1 comes with a standard analogue output or an RS-485 module and is normally fabricated to fit into 1 inch NPT pipes.

A 2 inch explosionproof version is available with CSA or ATEX certification.

Moisture measurement in oil

Moisture measurement in lubricating and insulation oils makes an important contribution to long-term maintenance functionality of plant and equipment
Moisture Measurement In Oil With the Lufft A1-SDI Indicator and Moisture Sensor. Moisture measurement in lubricating and insulation oils makes an important contribution to long-term maintenance functionality of plant and equipment and the water content of transformer oil has significant influence on its insulation properties. Moisture monitoring is therefore of essential importance to daily operations.

In the same way as gas moisture, the moisture content of oil can be stated absolutely in ppm or relatively as the water content aw:while ppm is the water quantity/oil quantity, aw is the actual water content in relation to the water content of a saturated probe.

Oil that is completely free of water has an aw value of 0; completely saturated oil has an aw value of 1.

The new Lufft moisture sensor is based on a long-term stable, chemically resistant, capacitive sensor.

The measurement values that can be selected are water activity (aw), temperature (T) and the calculated water content in ppm for mineral transformer oil.

For non-mineral transformer oils, the device can be adapted by inputting the oil specific parameters of the specific oil into the SDI (Serial Digital Interface) Indicator.

Making sense of Relative Humidity

Monitoring relative humidity is vital in maintaining efficient control of an HVAC system: Dave Quelch of Able Instruments discusses some criteria for selecting RH sensors
Monitoring relative humidity is vital in maintaining efficient control of an HVAC system. Dave Quelch of Able Instruments discusses some criteria for selecting RH sensors. Maintaining optimum environmental conditions, such as humidity and temperature, is essential for any workspace, but particularly so for a clean room environment.

Of these parameters, relative humidity (RH) is one of the most challenging to measure because it is a truly analytical measurement where the sensor must make direct contact with the environment.

RH is also one of the most critical to measure as it has a direct influence on the perception of comfort by staff in the area and can affect the performance of equipment; so it’s important to feed the right information into the control system, so it can make the right decisions.

This necessitates choosing the right type and quality of sensor - and ensuring they are properly calibrated.

For HVAC applications these include psychrometry, displacement, resistive, capacitive and liquid sorption sensors.

Psychrometry is a well-established method that has the benefit of being simple and inexpensive, although it does have intensive maintenance requirements.

Psychrometers are very accurate at near-saturation (100%) conditions, but at lower RH the accuracy is poor and they cannot be used at temperatures below 0C.

Perhaps the oldest type of RH sensor still in common use is the displacement sensor, which is inexpensive to manufacture and highly resistant to contamination.

Unfortunately, this type of sensor has a tendency to drift over time and there is a significant lag between the change occurring and it being registered by the sensor (hysteresis).

A particularly popular choice for HVAC applications is the bulk polymer resistive sensor, which provides a direct, secondary measurement of RH.

These use a humidity-sensitive salt embedded in a protective coating that is permeable to water vapour, providing protection against contaminants in the air while ensuring an accurate measurement.

What makes these types of sensors popular for HVAC applications is their relative immunity to surface contamination.

However, it is important to bear in mind that while a surface build up will not have an adverse effect on accuracy, it will delay the response time, so surfaces will need to be cleaned as part of a general maintenance regime.

In addition, these sensors are better suited for use in RH ranges above 20% because of the extremely high resistance at RH values below this figure.

Where a high degree of sensitivity is required at low RH, the capacitive sensor is frequently chosen.

These are usually designed with parallel plates with porous electrodes, or with interdigitated fingers on a substrate.

The sensor material is very thin to achieve a large signal change with humidity.

It also permits water to enter and leave easily and allows for fast drying and easy calibration.

Capacitive sensors are ideal for high temperature environments because the temperature coefficient is low and the polymer dielectric can withstand high temperature.

At low humidity levels these sensors are very sensitive and provide a relatively fast response; but at higher RH values they have a tendency to saturate and become non-linear.

Whatever type of sensor is specified, it is important to ensure correct calibration before delivery - ideally individually rather than batch tested.

The manufacturer should also be able to provide an audit trail for calibration, using methods approved by the National Physical Laboratory.

To that end, chilled mirror (optical condensation) hygrometers are widely accepted as the most precise method for calibrating the sensors used in day-to-day HVAC applications.

These use the actual condensation point of the ambient gas and can easily be made traceable to international calibration standards such as UKAS and NIST.

Alternative methods for calibrating RH sensors include salt baths, but these require a long equilibrium time to achieve accurate results and, with commercial pressures in play, it is all too easy to rush the calibration at the expense of accuracy.

Salt baths are also very prone to cross-contamination.

In an environment where accurate measurements are critical to effective environmental control, the accuracy of the information from sensors is vital.

In choosing the most appropriate sensor for the particular space, HVAC designers can ensure the system response is based on meaningful information.

Vaisala introduces the new Vaisala Humicap moisture and temperature transmitter series for oil, the MMT330. The series facilitates fast, reliable, and accurate on-line measurement of moisture and temperature in oil. Moisture measurement for oil can considerably decrease maintenance costs and prolong the service lifetime of machines.

The main applications for the MMT330 are the moisture measurement of lubrication, hydraulic fluid and transformer oils.

The MMT330 measures water activity and temperature in oil.

The water activity measurement in oil offers several advantages compared to the traditional ppm-measurement.

The MMT330 provides reliable information on how close the oil is to its saturation point, ie the formation of free water.

Oil-specific calibration is not necessary, as water activity is not affected by the type or age of the oil.

Moreover, the transmitter can be ordered with a ball valve set, allowing installation and removal of the probe for calibration without draining the oil system.

The MMT330 can be ordered with a large numerical and graphical display with a multilingual menu.

With the new probe options the operating pressure range has been expanded to 250 bars.

Data logging capability and the ability to download to a PC allow the user to monitor measurement trends and up to one year of historical data.

Due to full compatibility with the Vaisala Humicap hand-held moisture in oil meter MM70, field-checking, maintaining, and calibrating the MMT330 is easy.

The Vaisala Group is a successful international technology company that develops and manufactures electronic measurement systems and equipment for meteorology, environmental sciences, traffic safety and industry.

Portable hygrometers supplied to Chernobyl

Dewpoint instruments manufactured by Michell Instruments have been supplied to engineers working at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in the Ukraine, formerly part of the Soviet Union
Dewpoint instruments manufactured by Michell Instruments have been supplied to engineers working at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in the Ukraine, formerly part of the Soviet Union. Two Cermax portable dewpointmeters have been supplied via the Michell Instruments Russian distributors ‘Regular Co’. One of the Cermax instruments will be used to monitor and log the dewpoint (moisture content) of instrument air, with a dewpoint of -60C.

The other instrument is to be used to monitor argon with a dewpoint of -80C.

The argon is to be used for welding and the moisture content is critical to achieve the extremely high standard of welding required in the reconstruction of a nuclear power station.

After the explosion of one of the nuclear reactors in April 1986, the policy of the authorities was to source all equipment from local (Ukrainian or Russian) equipment.

However the required specification and quality of the Cermax cannot be matched by local equipment so special dispensation was given to Regular Co, which allowed them to quote Cermax as part of the tender process, in which they were eventually successful.

The Cermax utilises the Michell Instruments Ceramic Sensor to provide accurate and stable measurement of moisture of most commonly used gases.

Features include data logging, pressure compensation and fast response.

For hazardous areas and explosive gases the Cermax IS is available, which is ATEX, FM and CSA certified.
